Post Civil War Era CDV #5

PC 5     THE BRIDE WORE BLACK.   c 1870 CDV of a Bride & Groom
Photographer  Unknown  (Germany)
Condition   MINT
Description   I don't know what the meaning of the black dress is. A young widow still in mourning? Couldn't be, the customs of the day wouldn't allow for a re-marriage so soon. Maybe a close relative died after the plans for the wedding was in place? It certainly looks like she has been crying a lot and he doesn't look so happy either. Was it common to wear a black bridal gown? Please tell.
Comment  This came from a German album according to my notes. No ID. Good contrast & clarity. A very somber, well posed CDV.
