| DEC1 PAIR OF ANTIQUE BRONZES "THE HORSES OF MARLY" Paris, France | |||
| Date & Maker c1880 marked "COUSTOU" | |||
| Description The Horses of MARLY, monumental statues representing a group of horses, that are found at the beginning of the Champs Elysées are now at the Louvre Museum and have been replaced by copies. The originals were sculpted by Guillaume Coustou who worked in Versailles, Paris & Marly. They were executed in 1740-45 & moved to the Place de la Concorde in 1794. The pair I'm offering here are antique PATINATED Bronze Versions of those spectacular works of art. They were made for the commercial market in various metals & sizes and are still produced today in shiny new brass & clunky molds. What sets these apart is the fact that they are highly detailed Bronze, not Spelter, that they are GENUINE ANTIQUES & their large size. | |||
| Condition Excellent. The saddle blankets , loin clothes & bases were cold painted (beige) but had so much paint loss that I had it all removed. Those areas now show the unpolished, unpatinated Bronze as it was when they left the foundry. There is a bit of one of the reins missing. Superficial surface scratches consistent with age. | |||
| Comments Extremely heavy. | |||
| Size approx. 23" high x 24" wide ( 58.5 x 61 cm ) | |||
| $ 7,500 pair | |||
| Shipping Costly due to weight & size. Quotes dependant on buyer's instructions. | |||
